Fee: £90 (Retirement pensioners £45).
Because each instrument has its own characteristics, performers can produce a remarkable range of musical effects. We shall explore the repertoire and history of individual instruments, and see how composers and instrumentalists coax wonderful music from strings, woodwind and brass. (CRN 14197)

During this course we shall uncover meanings of many well-known works of art – paintings, sculptures, music – that were inspired by myths and legends. We shall look into myths of Ancient Greece, heroes of Antiquity, New and Old Testament and religious references that inspired artists from Praxiteles of Athens to Salvador Dali. We shall also explore individual perceptions of various artists and common features of these works. (CRN 14185)
Wagner in time and place
Professor Roderick Swanston
Saturday 7th March, 10am-5pm and Sunday 8th March, 11am-4pm.
Fee: £24.50 (Retirement pensioners £12.25).
Wagner’s works have been studied and dissected from many angles. This weekend course aims to look at Wagner’s oeuvre from the point of view of his interaction with the politics, society and ideas of his day. How his view of power, redemption, justice, duty and other things sprang from his reading and life and entered into mythical form in his operas. It will examine his progress to the Dresden barricades and his retreat into the personal journeys of individuals. (CRN 11436)

Weekend courses

enrolment is essential for weekend courses.
Accreditation
Some of the courses (indicated on the programme) are accredited. This means that credits are available, at the same level as the first year of a university degree. To obtain credits, it is necessary to do assessed work, normally essays or assignments. Credits can be put towards a university Certificate or Diploma. Taking credits can also be a good introduction to Higher Education, particularly for people who have been out of formal education for some time, and may make it easier to gain access to part time Higher Education on the island. Credits also provide evidence of educational achievement to an employer, and can form part of a record of personal and professional development. If you are interested in taking credits, please contact Helen Kneale, the Course Organiser, for more information.
Course Cancellation: if it is for any reason necessary to cancel or re-arrange a course, for example as a result of a lecturer being ill or bad weather, attempts will be made to contact all students enrolled on the course and to announce any cancellations or changes on Manx Radio.
Please note that although the University of Liverpool
does its best to carry out the programme, sometimes circumstances
beyond its control mean that courses might be subject to change.
