He was also a member of the Board of the Northern Chamber Orchestra Limited from 1987-1995. John Bethell's name can be found in 'Men of Achievement', 'International Leaders in Achievement', '5,000 personalities of the World', for contributions to the arts, and the 'International Who's Who in Music' and 'Who's Who in Greater Manchester'. In 1988 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music by the Marquis Giuseppe Scicluna International University Foundation and in 1990 the Albert Einstein International Academy Foundation Medal for his services to music. In 1999 he was awarded the Rotary Club of Onchan International Ambassador Award and in Her Majesty The Queen's New Year 2001 Honours List he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to music on the Isle of Man, and received his award personally from Her Majesty The Queen at an investiture at Buckingham Palace. John. Bethell is a speaker/lecturer at luncheons, dinners and other occasions, and his lecture 'Living with Crotchets and Quavers' has become especially widely appreciated by many groups and societies throughout the British Isles. His work for charity is widely acknowledged, especially that for Save the Children, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Disabled Living, Rotarians' Charities, Turning Point and Hospice. Surprisingly enough he does have some spare time which he likes to spend walking, swimming and gardening and eating good food.
